The Legend & His School

Salam Sem05,

He is a legend, his thoughts and ideas have sparked new thinking in Design Education and its school. His philosophy lead to a new design movement that gave birth to new approach to thinking about a design school and its purpose. He is Walter Gropius and his ideas lead to the famous BAUHAUS movement. It was a new concept at that time (just before world war II) and with it came a new look for a design school.

This school has a strong tagline. Its form was derived from this thinking. Here are some of its principles:
  • most student should face the fact that their future should be involved primarily with industry and mass production rather than with individual craftsmanship
  • the schools of design should, as the Bauhaus did, bring together the various arts of painting, architechture, theatre, photography, weaving, typography, etc., into a modern synthesis which disregards conventional distinctions between the "fine" and "applied" arts
  • a school of design should have on its faculty the purely creative and disinterested artist such as the easel painter as a spiritual counterpoint to the practical technician in order that they may work and teach side by side for the benefit of the student
  • manual experience of materials is essential to the student of design- experience at first confined to free experiment and then extended to the practical workshop
  • because we live in the 20th century, the student architect or designer should be offered no refuge in the past but should be equipped for the modern world in its various aspects, artistic, technical, social, economic, spiritual, so that he may function in society not as a decorator but as a vital participant.

Walter Gropius needs no introduction (does he?). He started the Bauhaus movement and practically design a whole new Design School concept from its building to its curriculum. This is design at its best. Have an idea and follow it through.

He is truly a Legend. Will you be one?
Lets talk ideas...yours.

Master of REVIT Architecture

By now most of us have heard about REVIT. But not many of us realize how different REVIT actually is compared to other Autodesk's programmes. I was a bit skeptical when I heard REVIT will revolutionize the industry a few years after I stepped back to Malaysia. I thought Sketchup would still be the prime game for most of us. I was told about what it can do. I was generally surprised as to how this simple programme could elegantly change how we work, teach and study architecture. So what does it actually do?

It works based on how each element in the project carries its own parameters that are adjustable and customisable. You don't draw a thick line that represents a wall, you actually DRAW a wall. The programme understands that it's a wall and its relevant properties (it has mass, bears loads, and could have openings and so on. Unlike in Sketchup, the programme doesn't care if it's a wall or a floor, it doesn't need to recognize it. But REVIT does.

This parametric system allows everything in the project to have its own properties, right down to how many layers a wall should have, and if the finishing is using Nippon Paint or cheap ‘cap ayam’ paint. And it'll do the costing for you too! Literally, as you add more things in your design, you can see the numbers add up in the schedule. You can set the exact cost of the project right from the start with little concern about contingencies.

What REVIT does is simplify all the jobs for an architect. From the initial site study/massing, up to the actual designing stage, down to the detailing and the schedules. An experienced REVIT user would be able to do presentation drawing and working drawing at the same time, convert it with a click of a mouse button. You can do photorealistic renderings without the need to sub it out to a third party.

ONE PROGRAMME TO RULE THEM ALL!!!!!

It will put a lot of people out of business. Architects won't need assistants. They can work together collaboratively on one project without to worry about synchronicity. They won't need 3D modelers to do their presentations. They don't need to wait for QS to come up with the total building cost. They don't have to wait for mechanical or civil engineers to tell them if the design can work or not. REVIT will tell you if it can or cannot and make the decision fast.

Despite all its capabilities, REVIT is a danger to young students. If we were ever worried about Sketchup governing the students' ability to design, REVIT would drive us up the trees. It's a very dangerous tool for them. It will tell you if the rafter can but placed on the wall plate or not. But it doesn't tell you why.

Students must have the understanding about design and construction in order not to get caught up with the limitations. In my experience, REVIT have ways to get around a lot of things. But if the student couldn't realize that he couldn't do something because he's doing it wrong and not because REVIT can't do it, he will be a slave to the programme. REVIT is not a programme we can teach using typical means. I do not recommend REVIT to sem3 or sem4 students. I would only attempt to introduce them at sem5 under expert supervision. I'd say only sem6 and above should have enough expertise to master the tool.

Do not underestimate the power of REVIT. It is indeed a powerful Ring that can rule them all.
Best advice is, equipped yourself with a variety of tools and don't become the tool. You should be known as an architect first, not the Revit guy with rendering skills.

'..if you can SMELL what The Rock is cooking..!!!'

as salam dan salam sejahtera,

bapa mertua saya suka tengok wrestling dan setiap hari selasa (kalau tak salah saya) beliau akan melekat depan tv tengok wrestling.saya pun layan jugak dan favourite wrestler saya adalah ' the most electrifying man in sport entertainment' - THE ROCK!!

apa kena mengena The Rock dengan projek design kita?? ok ...read on...

The Rock menggunakan tagline 'If you can smell what the rock is cooking!!' dan lagu rancak lalu menarik perhatian seluruh penonton.hebat...hebat...!! so,anda semua perlu 'tagline' untuk projek ini!!

bak kata The Rock...'IF YOU CAN SMELL WHAT THE ROCK IS COOKING!!!

2nd Crit just around Da' corner

Salam 05,

Semoga berjaya..

Open Crit 01: A Little Review....

anak biri-biri yang kehilangan pedoman....kesian....
(gambar hiasan semata-mata)

as salam + slamat sejahtera,

a. Kesemua student yang dinilai TIADA rujukan/references - WAKE UP!! anda bukannya Master Builder spt Calatrava atau Foster mahupun Rogers yg tidak perlukan rujukan...even mereka pun refer to sources untuk menghasilkan design...buku,majalah,imej internet perlu digunakan utk rangsang idea seterusnya dpt dikembangkan menjadi end product.bukannya lakar2 bulatan tanpa pedoman kemudian assume itu adalah idea terhebat anda...

Solution: rajin2 la belek majalah, jurnal, browse relevant website atau compilation of students works untuk develop idea anda...juga,jemput la ke resource centre di pejabat senibina untuk browse some of the books/magazine there...the keys to the cabinet are with Cik Sue...make full use out of it!!

c. Design Statement/Storyline tidak jelas...: students didapati nervous, mumbling serta tidak tahu apa yang hendak dibentangkan....that's what happened if you do not know what you're doing...bila anda faham sesuatu perkara maka ia akan menjadi mudah untuk menerangkannya...begitu juga dengan design...anda perlu faham apa yang anda mahu untuk projek ini...ada beberapa student gunakan Architectural Terms spt 'Form Follows function'dan 'Green Building' namun mereka tidak faham ttg terms itu menyebabkan pembentangan terkeluar dari konteks...

Solution: kenalpasti apa yang anda mahu buat untuk projek ini...memangla kita nk kena design Arch School tp anda perlu establish your own strong reasons behind your design...so,refer back to item b yang kita diskass di atas...
also, cari statement yang dapat memberikan 'WOW' factor pada design anda...1st impression penting untuk convince the klien/panel that your design is the BEST design...macamana nk dapatkan a good design statement?? -->'Outcome-Based Education' = Gembala....

any comments??

PUO school of ARCHITECTURE

Salam designer’s@5

We are now in the project 3 : puo school of architecture which I believe will be your ultimate challenge to test your ability in design INDIVIDUALLY. Now let consider how are you going to design ‘school of design’.

You might think your architecture style will follow the original building of ‘campus B’. One student asked me that. Yes its true because in architecture, the design should reflect the site context in order to create ‘sense of place’. But when we talk about campus, every faculty should portray their own image. This is the opportunity for you to design your own school of architecture and let it be whatever you want .Later on, you need to justify why your design should be like that. (you need a further discussion with lecturer on this!).My points is, don’t restrict your design with existing campus B image. Try to explore new ideas and create a new building that reflect the NEW school of architecture of PUO…

Have fun guys.

SITE ANALYSIS..click here to view document..

Salam Sem05...

As we all know, tomorrow students will be doing their site analysis for project 3 which is PUO-school of architecture. The site has been given to the student which is located at golf course nearby our beloved Unit Senibina's current building. Therefore, before enter the site students need to know what to do when doing site analysis. What kind of information are crucial on site. These kind of information will surely help students in design process later on.

So here we prepared list of information needed in site analysis as a guideline for students when doing site analysis tomorrow. Luckily we have site just nearby our class so that if we miss the information, we can always come and do the analysis again. Remember to take as much as informative picture as you can. Don't just take a posing picture with nothing to tell except about your make-up, dresses, hair style, sun glasses and etc.

Good luck guys and have some fun...(while you can hehe)

PUO school of Architecture - Research it first!

Salam Everyone,

Research is and always will be an important concern for people who want to solve problems. As problem solvers, we need to identify the problem, understand it from different angles before beginning to address it.

SEM05’s final project is an Architecture School. This is a good opportunity to start thinking in advance about how to do research. Research is about asking questions and finding answers. Its about being sure of what you want to do based on facts.

For your upcoming project, try this out, answers these questions as a group/individual:

What is Architecture? How do you define it? What is its component? How is it different from construction, how is it similar? Etc…

What is a school? What is an education? What types of education are there? What is Polytechnic Education and how is it different from other types of education, Etc…

What do you mean by an Architecture School? How is Architecture taught at other schools? How should it be taught at the polytechnics? Etc,…

Who are design students? How do they behave? How do students learn to design? Is creativity important, how to be creative? Etc,…

Who are the users of this school? What activity do they do? What spaces are important to promote learning and creativity?, Etc…

Try answering these questions. I KNOW SOME OF THESE QUESTIONS ARE DIFFICULT but try understanding them as best as you can. I am NOT asking you to do an in depth research but just to make you understand the importance of research in understanding a problem. A Simple Research will make you appreciate your design even more.

Now, Research needs data. Data can obtain from reading, interviewing students and lecturers, visits, observing how an architectural school function, etc. Ask these questions, collect data and then try to understand them by making a conclusion before designing your ARCH SCHOOL!

Questions?
